Pool at sunset with well-maintained equipment

Your pool equipment is the heart of your swimming pool system. The pump circulates water, the filter removes contaminants, and the heater extends your swim season. When properly maintained, pool equipment can last 8–15 years. Neglect it, and you could be facing premature replacements costing thousands of dollars. Here's how to keep everything running smoothly.

Pool pumps should run 8–12 hours per day during swimming season to turn over the entire pool volume at least once. Check the pump basket weekly and remove any debris that could restrict flow. Listen for unusual noises — grinding or screeching sounds often indicate worn bearings that need replacement. Inspect the pump lid O-ring seasonally and lubricate it with silicone-based lubricant to maintain a proper seal. If you notice air bubbles in the pump basket, you likely have a suction-side air leak that needs attention.

Pool filters come in three types: sand, cartridge, and diatomaceous earth (DE). Sand filters should be backwashed when the pressure gauge reads 8–10 psi above the clean starting pressure, and the sand should be replaced every 5–7 years. Cartridge filters need to be removed and hosed off every 4–8 weeks and replaced every 1–2 years depending on use. DE filters require backwashing similar to sand filters, plus periodic disassembly to clean the grids — typically once or twice per season.

Pool heaters — whether gas, heat pump, or electric — benefit greatly from annual professional servicing. For gas heaters, check for proper ventilation, inspect the heat exchanger for scale buildup, and verify the ignition system is functioning correctly. Heat pumps should have their evaporator coils cleaned of debris and the refrigerant charge checked annually. All heater types perform better when water chemistry is properly balanced, as acidic water accelerates corrosion of heat exchangers.

Beyond individual components, pay attention to your overall plumbing system. Check for leaks at unions, valves, and fittings regularly. Maintain proper water level — too low and the pump can run dry and burn out; too high and the skimmer can't do its job. Keep the area around your equipment pad clean and clear of vegetation to ensure proper airflow.
