Swimming pool ready for summer

As temperatures climb and the days get longer, it's time to think about opening your pool for the summer season. A proper pool opening ensures clean, safe water from day one and prevents costly problems down the road. Whether you're a first-time pool owner or a seasoned veteran, following a structured process makes all the difference.

Start by carefully removing your pool cover. Pump off any standing water and remove leaves or debris before folding it up. Clean the cover thoroughly with a mild detergent, let it dry completely, and store it in a cool, dry place. A well-maintained cover will last many seasons and save you money in the long run.

Next, reconnect all your pool equipment. Reinstall drain plugs on the pump, filter, heater, and chlorinator. Reattach any ladders, handrails, or diving boards you removed for winter. Prime the pump and turn on the filtration system, checking for leaks at every connection point. Let the system run for at least 24 hours to circulate the water thoroughly before testing chemistry.

Once circulation is established, it's time to balance your water chemistry. Test the pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness, and chlorine levels. Aim for a pH between 7.2 and 7.6, total alkalinity of 80–120 ppm, and free chlorine between 1–3 ppm. Shock the pool with a high dose of chlorine to eliminate bacteria and algae that may have developed over the winter months.

Finally, vacuum the pool floor, brush the walls and tile line, and clean out the skimmer baskets. Run the filter for 24–48 hours after shocking, then retest the water. Once all levels are in the proper range, your pool is ready for the first swim of the season.
